Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by the bacillus Mycobaterium tuberculosis, which worldwide is one of the top 10 causes of death and the leading cause from a single infectious agent. In 2018, an estimated 10 million (130 per
100,000 population) people fell ill with TB worldwide and it caused 1.5 million (20 per 100,000 population) deaths. World
Health Organization (WHO) published its annual report ¡¸Global Tuberculosis Report 2019¡¹, which showed data that were
reported by 202 countries. Among 202 countries, the Republic of Korea ranked 85th in TB incidence and 99th in TB mortality. This made Korea the OECD country with the highest incidence and second-highest mortality of TB. To accelerate the progress towards ending TB by 2030, WHO suggested multisectoral action on the broader determinants of the TB epidemic needs to intensify. Following the global commitments, Korea has implemented ¡°the Second National TB Control Plan, 2018-2022¡± and adopted strengthening measures on tuberculosis prevention and control.
